The Colorado Real Estate license law now requires that a candidate must be 18 years old, an US citizen, and successfully complete the six courses described in this section (a total of 168 classroom hours), pass the real estate broker's examination, and submit the appropriate licensing application including a CBI background check to the Colorado Real Estate Commission. There are three levels of responsibility for real estate licensees: associate broker, independent broker, and employing broker.
An associate broker must meet the above requirements and must be employed and supervised by an employing broker to hold an active license.
An independent broker must have two years of verifiable active real estate licensure, must pass or have pasted the state portion of the broker's exam, and must submit the appropriate application to complete the change of license status. An independent broker is self employed and cannot employ other licensees.
An employing broker must have two years of verifiable active real estate licensure, must pass or have pasted the state portion of the broker's exam, must complete the 24-hour Brokerage Administration Course, and must submit the appropriate application to complete the change of license status.
For more information about these requirements and/or the state exam, call the Real Estate Commission at (303)894-2166.
